ADAPT: A Zine About How To Keep Making Art (collaboration)
There are so many things that can stand in the way of creating art. Being on the receiving end of society's micro- and macroaggressions and biases can take a lasting toll on one's creative drive (but also could inspire a righteous rage and motivation). Disability, illness, and mental health can all be an impediment to working as well as a reason to create. Consuming the news, bearing witness to the daily atrocities of late capitalism and dying colonial imperialism, especially when they impact your friends and loved ones, can make the artistic process seem like small beans, to say the least. While art can be therapeutic, traumas and disruptions we experience can still get in the way of making.
So how do you manage these? What happens if you're too scared to write an artist statement? What if you can't get out of bed and/or get to your studio? Inside, 15 artists share the adaptations they have made to their practices as they faced challenges and struggles in continuing their work. Artists offer advice, encouragement, and examples of the work they have created during their struggles in the hopes of inspiring others to keep creating, no matter the obstacles.
